As of August 2002, CD-ROM Tool can use Nero's ASPI layer to communicate with your drives. For those who don't know, Nero is a CD burning software package that can be found at www.ahead.de. Used to store programs and data files, a CD-ROM holds 650MB or 700MB of data and employs a different recording format than the audio CD (CD-DA), from which it evolved. In the 1990s, the CD-ROM rapidly replaced the floppy disk for software distribution. An audio CD player cannot read CD-ROMs, but CD-ROM drives can play audio discs. You could also try scratching them with a knife or other instrument so they cannot be read, but that would be time-consuming. IMHO, your best bet would be to get a CD shredder if you can afford it. That way, you just stick one CD in after another and it is much faster.

In this guide, you will be shown how to mount a DVD or CD using Ubuntu Linux. The guide shows multiple methods in case one way doesn't work for you.

The Easy Way

CD drives can be labeled as CD, Compact Disc, CD-RW, or CD/R-RW, or some combination of those. The word disc can also appear on the drive. DVD drives use the DVD logo. Combination CD/DVD drives might use some mishmash of the logos. And, of course, some drives might not use any labeling. Can you make a USB flash drive appear as a CD-ROM drive, and make it read/write able.I know this can be done but every answer I have heard has been for WinXP, I am using Win7, and the autorun.inf.

In most cases when you insert a DVD you just have to be a little bit patient whilst the DVD loads. You will then see a screen similar to the one shown in this guide.

The messages you will receive will vary depending on the type of media you have inserted.

For example, if you have inserted a DVD from the front of a magazine, which contains software designed to run automatically, you will see a message saying that the software wants to run. You can then choose whether to run that software or not.

If you insert a blank DVD you will be asked what you want to do with the DVD such as create an audio DVD.

If you insert an audio CD you will be asked whether you want to import the music into your audio player such as Rhythmbox.

If you insert a DVD you will be asked whether you want to play the DVD in Totem.

You will be asked what to do when you insert this DVD again in the future. The examples include:

  • ask what to do
  • do nothing
  • open the folder in the file manager
  • choose another application

You may wonder what the point is to a guide showing how to do something so simple, but sometimes things don't go according to plan and you will want to use the command line to mount the DVD.

If the DVD hasn't automatically mounted for some reason you can try right-clicking on the DVD and choosing the mount option from the context menu.

Can you make a USB flash drive appear as a CD-ROM drive, and make it read/write able.
I know this can be done but every answer I have heard has been for WinXP, I am using Win7, and the autorun.inf OPEN command is not longer supported, I know that for CD-ROM drives it still is, and if you get a USB recognised as a CD-ROM then the autorun.inf will work.
It works on WinXP I have tested, can't test on vista, as I have no vista PCs. But should still work.
If at all possible can it be done in Win7, and I don't want to install programs that have to run on the PC for it to work, as it defeats the purpuse, is there some sort of file or something that 'tricks' Win7 to read the drive as a CD-ROM, but also allows read/write, as I will be installing portable apps onto it.
Help would be greatly appresiated
Thanks,
Pierre
